working with nostolgia

topic posted Thu, March 13, 2008 - 9:37 AM by  Barton F1nk
So here I am, trying to read up for a poli-sci course, and every couple pages I find myself lost in nostalgic reflections. Five minutes later I look down at my text again and realize what I've been doing. It's strange because last week I was such an efficient worker.

I shift between these entirely different frames of mind with such serendipity, and they're so difficult to maintain for long stretches. It would certainly be great to return to my last week self so I could get this work done faster.

If it is ADD, it only rears its head every once in a while, and only when I'm feeling particularly emotional and introspective. I think it's more likely that I'm selfish when it comes to following my interests, and while I like my studies, there are times when my indulgent reflections are much more important to me than what I'm learning.

      Still, it's a possibility I suppose.

Rereading my post I can see that you may have interpreted it differently than I intended. I shift between frames of mind just about every other week, not every five minutes. Sometimes the frame of mind I find myself in within those stretches are not conducive to getting work done. Other times I am enormously productive and focused.

I will look in to it (although my life hasn't been hindered really, besides the occasional scenario mentioned in the first post). It does seem to me however, that there is a connection between what I've described and the INFP personality type:

-- "Some characteristics of NP's may include: procrastination, divergent thinking, many interests, scatter-brained, get bored easily with something that doesn't interest them, extremely focused with something that does interest them, daydream a lot... Often, these are also the descriptions of ADD behaviour." -- blog.cybette.com/archives/000089.html

-- And Paraphrasing a speed reading book I once read; "Most self-discipline manuals are written by J's and bought by P's, who will eventually find themselves slacking regardless".

While I'm not discounting ADD as a possibility, I do think that if there is a type likely to be mis-diagnosed, it would be the NP's.

Jessy - just start googling A.D.D./ADHD , particularly adult form ...
            you'll see
this is NOT about 'INFP' or J or anything else ...
It's a neurological condition , like it or not ...

synergy... I dont disagree.. I was asking your personal opinion.
I have googled ADD and adult ADD and i am looking into it.
since we are on the infp tribe i figured you believe some of it to be part of the behavior or maybe not .. this is why Im asking
simply for my own knowledge .

              thanks

there are lots of concurrences in the physiology of the human monkey animal ......
but getting on medication that stops the scatterbrained-ness of a.d.d. can be quite advantageous .
meant no personal offense Jessy .

                peace and turkey sandwiches ...

I'm hearing tertiary introverted Sensing in what you're saying.

Especially if you're in the 20-35 year-old age range, that's *typically* the function INFPs are developing at that point in time.

(Certainly I don't write it off as ADD -- but then again I don't put much stock in ADD anyway, since by and large it often seems to be a label stuck on people by a very "J"-oriented society who simply doesn't honor the "P" preference.)

I invite you to visit my website, www.INFJorINFP.com to learn more about your preferences, and to see whether it provides you with any relief.

Since the tertiary is carried by the archetype of the Eternal Child, it sounds as though some part of you needs relief, some joy, some fun, some downtime. What if you just gave in to the impulse to be unbelievably nostalgic for a while instead of fighting it?
