I've never had a fulfilling job and that's a good thing. Because it reflects my values and belief that my job shouldn't be the thing that fulfills me. But that's just me and it just depends on what you value.

I like my job and I like going to work, the same way I like going to a good restaurant and having really good meal. But I don't find going to restaurants that fulfilling. It's just something I enjoy doing.

That belief is part of my personality style (www.amazon.com/New-Person...553373935). It's different for different people, like my wife for whom work defines part of who she is. She finally started her own video editing company in order to do work that she found meaningful and fulfilling.

For me work falls into the same category as eating, sleeping and going to the bathroom. It's just something I do because that's part of the parameters of the environment (ie being a human who needs to pay bills). I don't really feel that fulfilled going to bed every night even though I really, really like to sleep.

For me, the jobs I've stayed in the longest are the ones where I'm learning something new (which is one of the things makes me fulfilled) or interesting.
  • I'm a pediatric nurse, and I absolutely DO NOT reccommend it! In some ways it is fulfilling, but the health care system is set up so that there are never enough nurses/resources to properly take care of our patients. I am forever frustrated and feeling guilty about the child who had to wait for his pain medicine because I was busy, the parent who needed a shoulder to cry on but I was forced to ignore, the toddler I locked in a "cage crib" (they're really called that!) because I had too many other patients to watch her properly.... the list goes on and on. At the same time, society expects the saintly and professional Nurse Nightingale, so there is a constant barrage of criticism from doctors, managers, and patients/families when we can't meet their expectations. I am an emotional wrck at work; I'm frequently called into my boss's office- he has actually told me I need to lower my standards! How can I lower my standard about caring for sick and dying children? But that is what I'm expected to do. Anyway, I could go on forever on this subject, so I'll just stop here.

If you like kids and really want to work in the hospital, a career you might consider is a Child Life Specialist. Most of ours are master's-prepared with some sort of psychology background. They're responsible for helping kids cope with hospitzlization/illness by organizing play acitivities, distracting and soothing them during painful procedures, and mentally preparing them before tests/surgeries
    • just wanted you to know that i felt such relief after reading your post. i, too am a pediatric nurse, and so i relate to the feelings of being in an endless cycle of frustration largely due to the way the healthcare system is set up. And so i value the rare moments that i am truly able to be present for my patients but lately it's been a struggle. i can deal with crying children but it's dealing with the system that pushes my button. thanks for the post again!

It's weird to say but I enjoyed immensely working in a library shelving books and putting them in order. I also liked being able to find books for customers that were unable to find them. That said I also really enjoyed my most recent job at a non-profit on a more intellectual level because it strongly satisfied my idealistic streak

Alan, I think I would find that library job strangely fulfilling, as well. The simplicity of it is appealing.

I don't have much work experience thus far in my life, but I would say working as a graduate teaching assistant was very fulfilling. I love being a support person and dealing with all the background work and details. I loved the variety--from the simplicity of editing powerpoints to grading papers and tests to getting a bit out of my comfort zone by teaching a lab. It was a good balance.

I really liked being a teaching assistant as well in college. That was probably by far my favorite job thus far. I loved interacting with the students on a one-on-one basis. The downside was definitely grading papers, but I solved that problem by outsourcing to roommates who needed to earn a buck or two :)

The most fulfilling job I ever had was teaching yoga in a women's prison. The most enjoyable job I ever had was watering plants in a large greenhouse. Plant energy is so peaceful. I could water, sweep, and reflect to my heart's content.

Hi fellow Dreamers. I'm new. I didn't see a "welcome" post so I thought I'd just do it here, and maybe other places too.

The most fulfilling job I've ever had is actually probably not super popular for INFPs, but then again it's just somewhat obscure.
The past two years I was a trail worker and I loved it! It was very labor intensive and think-demanding but there was so much quiet time to leave me with my thoughts. Mostly there were monotonous tasks but, once I got over the fact that building rock walls was extremely physically and mentally demanding, I found so much satisfaction in finally getting a good job done! Getting those giant rocks to fit juuuust right was really satisfying. It felt so good building things that weren't cookie-cutter. I could do without building new trails (cutting ground and trees) and woodwork, but everything else was spectacular.

I'm wondering if jobs that are creative or mentally intensive, like counseling/science endevors/inventing fit the general INFP mind-frame.

Paramedic; surprised myself by being in this profession for 25 years. Starting finally to feel a bit stretched by night shift, and am starting to look for another INFP outlet. Very few paramedics are INFP types. Learnt this from a personality workshop I did to look at different learning styles for paramedics when I was training students on the job for a while. At a scene, the technical types can freak a patient out with their efficiency. You see the patient looking concerned with like "wow, I must be sick for all this activity that is going on"; Me, I liked to hold a hand and talk to the patient. I think it helps a person to relax and to help themselves. I have even been told be patients "I know what you are doing", when I spend the time to talk TO them, and to distract them. Learn lots about life in this career too! Plus you get to look at lots of peoples bookshelves, if they dont mind.
