How tidy are you ?

topic posted Fri, August 10, 2007 - 8:21 PM by  ZaidaZadkiel
I seem unable to keep my place clean for more than a few seconds.
I'm TERRIBLE at keeping things tidy.

My working desk has to be messy so I can get stuff done.
If I clean my desk I can't work at all, because I get distracted by the cleanness D:

How is it for you ?
Do you keep your place clean + tidy ?

    good question....
This is kind of strange for me....
I am tidy with somethings ....
work has to be organized.. but only after Ive finished ....not during..thats another story..its all over the place..
I have some type of organization to my mess and if someone touches it , it throws me off.
my living space is fairly neat. ...my bathroom and kitchen have to be tidy ,but my bedroom doesnt stay tidy for too long..mostly with my paper work and mail ...
also with my folded clothes that I take out of my closet ..try on but dont wear....
    eventually I put them back.
any type of paper is very hard for me to maintain in order
at school ..I take great notes ..very neat but then I ant find where I placed them.
    hows that?

It's weird because I love being organized, everything in my room has a proper place, and if it doesn't I kind of freak out. I can keep it clean for a few days but then eventually it ends up being messy. But because I know that everything has a space where it belongs it really doesn't bother me that much. I also think it's odd that I can live in a messy room for days, but if my closet is unorganized I can't deal at all. So basically my closet's neater than my room, how weird is that? So yes, long story short, I'm messy but I don't really think of myself as that because I'm organized.

Is that unusual? Compared to the rest of my apartment, my closet is neat. The inside of my dresser, too. They would be neat by anyone's standard if I were comfortable getting rid of, or at least hiding, some unused items. Anything related to visual self-presentation is very important to me. I have problems getting rid of other possessions, too. For instance, my desk is cluttered with ancient papers. Old junk is one reason my place is a mess. The other is, voila, lack of storage space. My landlord has expressed notable displeasure with me a few times. I said, "Visual self-presentation is very important to me," so I must admit that I'd be happier if my apartment looked neater. I just don't know if I can do it and, unless the landlord makes me do more cleaning, lack the motivation to try.

J - sounds just like me. I tend to keep old papers, and things I'm attached to. When I was younger I had stacks and stacks of magazines there had to be 200, and my mom made me throw them away when we moved. That took a lot out of me, but I've gotten better now and I try to throw stuff that doesn't have any meaning out, though my magazine collection is now at about 100 again.

I also am very big on visual presentation. My books on my shelf have to be aligned in an aesthetically pleasing way, the clothes in my dresser drawers are folded just so. I like things to be fairly minimalistic and uncluttered and when I things don't have a proper place it bothers me. My room right now is pretty small and even though it's well organized I always tell myself that when I get a bigger room and more storage space I will no longer be messy. I guess it's black and white with me.

Hey, my bookshelves are relatively neat, too, with much organization by topic and some dividers. I'm glad I spent a few minutes on thinking of a reply, because my first instinct was to say that that's just because I highly value reading books. But then it can't be coincidence that the bookcases are very fancy, with glass doors that make the books nice to glance at. I'm embarrassed by a stack of junk by the bed, most of which is reading material there for easy access. Like walking a few feet to the bookcases is too much, because there is space in there for some of the pile.

Is it a universal that people who aren't particularly neat will store with relative care items they value much?

I can be Queen Tidy and Cleanliness...I am able to clean up and present well but left to my own devices; I am messy!

My office is messy, not grotty/dirty messy....stuff sort of everywhere messy, I save stuff I might find interesting, I have huge noticeboards full, I have filing cabinents I painted beautiful green and light green hues but the filing system is craziness, no order but I guess what, I can tell you exactly where every little bit of stuff is!

I have to keep partner or children out, they shift things!! eeek...then I am lost.

I am messy (organised) species. :-)

My bed is never made, I don't like to crawl into a made bed, rumpled and loose covers for me. My partner is *crisp clean made and tucked bed man*-god give me strength.

Having said all that, I would find it difficult to live with more of me, too much of a good thing...as long as my partner gives me space to be messy and doesn't make the bed I am happy and content.

(You know I am clean and hygienic-just inclined to be messy).

I just found this tribe, I'm so excited!
I'm an incredibly tidy person. I'm into tinkering. When I'm stressed out I really enjoy folding laundry. My husband is an INTP, and he has to be the messiest person I know. He leaves a trail wherever he goes. He has trouble with repetition, but thats the part I like best about cleaning!

hehe funny, i can be a perfectionist in some departments, but as for tidiness, hmm it depends really. for instance, my study desk has to be really tidy and has to be rather spacious for me to be comfortable enough, and get work done. On the other hand, other parts of my room can appear disorderly to others..but frankly, i'm comfortable enough with it. i can't stand it though when my surroundings are too tidy, primarily because it doesn't give me a natural feeling.

I would have to say that I love a tidy place but I'm really not tidy overall. I have the same issue as J. My place isn't big so when I do clean up the place gets messy the instant I start using anything plus I have a lot of tiny things I use all the time so it's virtually impossible to keep tidy all the time. My thing is with mail. I find a coupon in the mail I might be able to use so I keep it on the kitchen table for 2 months and then throw it away when I realized that it expired 6 weeks prior! I have a ton of crystals I use all the time so they're all over the place so it does look perpetually untidy here. I usually have a good house cleaning once a month where I do everything unless I know I'm going to have company.

I love this question. I recently had a temporary roommate. So, I noticed my habits more. I have my own rule about keeping the common area neat, whether someone else lives here or not. The floors are always clean. I like to be barefoot and have no interruptions from the floor when walking. Rinsed dishes are often left in the sink at night. I guess I just get done.
I grew up with pets who often took over certain areas of the house. My temp roommate had two dogs and a cat. They did more damage in two months than any of my pets as a child did. I do not like to clean up after animals. Not even their fir. If I had a housekeeper, I might feel differently.
I was not raised neat. My mom never went through my room with me to get rid of old things to organize, nor to clean. Really never for as long as I can remember.
I have come to appreciate donating old clothes, etc.
I love my closet to be neat!
My work space is chaotic no matter how much I go through it. It is the catch all. It sits in the "dining area" against a free standing wall in the middle of the first level. I am very disorganized with papers. Always have been. I wonder what that is about. Maybe just never taking on the habit.
My excuse is something has to give as a single parent.
    Baby awake. gotta go

So... I have been staying with my boyfriend for a long visit this time (It's long distance)... I am the one to do the cooking and cleaning while he is at work, and I have a (wonderful) reputation for being neat as a pin. But... He made a comment last night that had me laughing for the truth of it...

He noticed that when I clean, I do a thorough job of it. Everything sparkles, out comes the bleach and windex, the closet is organized, the kitchen is pristine, the towels folded and hung just so in the bathroom, BUT... If I don't know where something goes, if there are things that do not have a specific space, I seem to get a little lost as to what to do with them. So I create a pile with those things. And not just a pile, a pile in descending order from smallest to biggest. Like a pyramid from an ancient civilization. He laughs when he finds one on the bookcase, the dresser, the coffee table...

I had no idea that this was what I was doing, but it is quite true and very perceptive. If I KNOW where something goes, it is kept clean, if I don't, then I end up with clutter... Since he is a minimalist, there is little clutter... Since I am not, well, let's just say I think it may be time to lighten my load a little more...

When I was ten or so I was told by a teacher I adored that I would need TWO secretaries when I grew up. She was right. She also told me that some day I would be the guru on the mountain top. That one hasn't quite materialized, but I find the idea incredibly charming.

That said, I sometimes enjoy the task of cleaning when I can really delve into it and like to keep public/common areas tidy to maintain the appearance of order.
